Penkivska Culture

Maryna Lukach

The Penkivka culture was an archaeological culture that existed from the 5th to the 8th centuries, spanning the region from the Prut River to the Siverskyi Donets and occupying primarily the forest-steppe zone of Ukraine. It emerged as a result of the southward migration of tribes from the Kyiv culture. The Penkivka culture is believed to be associated with the Antes—one of the groups of early Slavic peoples. The culture existed from the 5th to the 7th centuries AD; Procopius and Jordanes mention it in their writings, describing the people as belonging to the Antes confederation. The Antes (Greek: *Antai*; Latin: *Antae*, *Antes*) were one of the largest confederations of Slavic tribes in the early Middle Ages. The name "Antes" is most likely an exonym. It is believed to be of Iranian origin, meaning "those on the fringe" or "those living at the edge." According to written sources, the Antes belonged to the Slavic linguistic group. The artworks are created using mixed techniques: textile collage, machine embroidery, hand embroidery, beads, textile markers, pastel, batik, photo printing on fabric, and appliqué. Size: 80x60 cm.

The artworks are created using mixed techniques: textile collage, machine embroidery, hand embroidery, beads, textile markers, pastel, batik, photo printing on fabric, appliqué. Size 80x60 cm.
