The idea for this gallery came from the Ukrainian poet and artist Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861). Shevchenko created a gallery entitled "Champions of Sacred Freedom" consisting of works he created depicting those in Ukraine and abroad who fought and advocated for freedom.
Embroidery is a quintessential art that has been practiced for millennia on the territory of Ukraine. It is attested in Scythian art of the 5th century BC. It may go back as far as the Cucuteni-Trypillia culture (approx. 5500-2750 BC), whose intricate artistry is attested on ceramics and buildings and may well have decorated their clothing also.
Traditional colorful embroidered shirts and dresses called "vyshyvanka" feature patterns of one's region or family. Today, Ukrainians around the world wear them on Vyshyvanka Day.
Because of its deep historic roots and continuity to the present, textile art is an ideal medium to convey Ukrainian culture and history. Maryna Lukach takes traditional Ukrainian embroidery to a new level with mixed media techniques, depicting Ukrainian culture and history in new ways.
