Hryhorii Skovoroda
Maryna Lukach
Skovoroda was a prominent Ukrainian philosopher, poet, and educator who became a key figure of the Ukrainian Enlightenment in the 18th century. He authored numerous philosophical and literary works that significantly influenced the development of Ukrainian culture and education.
"The world tried to catch me, but failed" (he requested that this be inscribed on his grave).
This year, the world marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of Hryhorii Skovoroda—a great dreamer, wandering philosopher, and educator. Skovoroda renounced the worldly life and career advancement, despite his outstanding achievements and brilliant education. Instead of domestic comfort, he chose a life of constant wandering and solitude—yet he considered himself an incredibly happy man.
Hryhorii Skovoroda’s phrase "UNEQUAL EQUALITY" implies that while God grants everyone an equal opportunity to be fulfilled, different vessels (people) have different capacities; the act of fulfillment itself—the fullness of soul and meaning—represents equality, rather than uniformity of external circumstances. This concept is symbolically illustrated by his fountain metaphor: the fountain fills various vessels according to their capacity, yet each vessel, once full, is essentially equal to the larger ones.
The fountain example:
God is like a fountain
that fills various vessels according to their capacity.
Different vessels
(people) have different capacities. The smaller vessel
receives less, yet is still equal to the larger one in its fullness.
The essence of equality
lies in the completeness of fulfillment (of the soul, of meaning), rather than in identical external circumstances or quantities.
Thus, Skovoroda emphasizes that true equality lies not in external uniformity, but in the inner fulfillment of each person according to their own measure.
