Tadeusz Kosciuszko

Maryna Lukach

Tadeusz Kościuszko was a son of Ukraine and a hero of the American War of Independence. Both his father’s lineage (the Kościuszkos) and his mother’s lineage (the Ratomskis) were old Ruthenian (Ukrainian) families from Galicia. Andrzej Tadeusz Bonawentura Kościuszko was a political and military figure of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, a national hero of both Poland and the United States, the leader of the 1794 uprising against Russia and Prussia, a participant in the American War of Independence, and a recipient of the Order of the White Eagle. He served as a Polish general, military engineer, and revolutionary, fighting in both the American War of Independence and the uprising in his homeland. Kościuszko set out for the American continent in 1776 after learning of the war for independence that had begun there; the ideals of the colonists fighting for their freedom resonated deeply with his own aspirations. There, he engaged in designing fortifications and constructing the fort at West Point. In 1783, Congress recognized his contributions, granting him the rank of colonel in the Continental Army (he also held the rank of brigadier general). However, unable to live without his homeland, Kościuszko returned to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1784. While participating in the war against Russia, he attained the rank of lieutenant general in Poland. Continuing the struggle against Russian occupation, he later became the leader of the uprising in Kraków. The renowned hero was laid to rest in 1817 in the crypt of a church in Solothurn, Switzerland. Today, his ancestral estate houses a museum. He is regarded as a national hero and liberator by the people of five countries, including the USA, France, Poland, Lithuania, and Belarus. In his final will, he freed his Belarusian peasants from serfdom and granted them land.
