Perun — originally the god of the sky and thunderstorms, and the bringer of rain. Later, he became the patron of war, warriors, and princely authority. In Kyivan Rus' during the 9th and 10th centuries, he was venerated as the supreme god; oaths sworn by the warriors of the Kyiv *druzhyna* (retinue) were sealed in his name. In the Christian era, he was replaced by Saint Elijah.
