Easter in Ukraine

Maryna Lukach

In Ukraine, preparations for Easter begin well in advance. Pure Thursday is a day dedicated to the love of Christ; on this day, Ukrainians complete all their preparations and house cleaning. In some regions, people wake up at 4 a.m. to bathe in water infused with blessed willow branches kept from Palm Sunday—a holiday that celebrates the Lord's Entry into Jerusalem and marks the beginning of the week leading up to Easter. They do this because they believe the water possesses sacred energy and healing properties. *Pysanky* (intricately decorated Easter eggs) were created late in the evening; the process was accompanied by prayers that imbued every pattern with positive energy and meaning. Traditionally, *paska* (Easter bread) is baked on Thursday, and once ready, it is decorated. Another special tradition is the coloring of eggs; since ancient times, colored eggs have been considered symbols of the rebirth of life, nature, and the sun. In the past, eggs were colored using natural materials, such as homemade dyes made from tree bark, fruit, herbs, and flowers. Next comes Good Friday—the strictest day of fasting in the liturgical year. It is a solemn day commemorating the Crucifixion of Christ. A strict fast is observed on this day, meaning no meat or dairy products are consumed, and no work is performed. On Saturday evening, the night service begins, and people bring their Easter baskets to be blessed. Starting at midnight on Sunday, people attend church services to hear the bells and, of course, have their Easter baskets blessed. At the beginning of the ceremony, a candle is lit; it must be carried home without the flame going out. Family members usually share a loaf of Easter bread and an Easter egg among themselves. It is believed that this custom bestows a "good destiny"—happiness, fortune, and talent—upon every family member. Easter Sunday should be welcomed with pure thoughts, as the holiday symbolizes the cleansing of the soul and liberation from sin. One should not use harsh language on this day; all grievances ought to be forgiven and forgotten. It is also customary to refrain from work and household chores. Easter celebrations conclude with visits to the graves of relatives. It is believed that on Easter, God opens the gates of heaven and hell, allowing the souls of deceased ancestors to visit their kin; they remain on earth alongside the living throughout Easter Week. However, Ukrainians today are increasingly open to other cultures and often decorate their homes with ornaments featuring nests, lambs, and bunnies.
