Saint Sophia Cathedral Kyiv

Софійський собор

Maryna Lukach

Saint Sophia Cathedral, or Sophia of Kyiv, is an 11th-century cathedral in Kyiv. Originally built in the Byzantine style, it suffered extensive damage; during the 17th and 18th centuries, it underwent restoration that fundamentally altered its appearance, and it now stands as an example of Ukrainian Baroque architecture. It is one of the few surviving structures from the era of Kyivan Rus'. The artwork depicts the cathedral across various periods, spanning from the 11th century to the present day. Photographs of the cathedral's interior frescoes have been incorporated into the design. This is a mixed-media textile artwork featuring textile collage, hand and machine embroidery, ribbon embroidery, beadwork, acrylic paint, pastel, batik, fabric photo prints, and textile markers. Dimensions: 80 x 60 cm.
