Vinnytsia

Maryna Lukach

There are several theories regarding the origin of Vinnytsia's name: the most popular attribute it to the Old Slavic word *vino* (meaning a gift or dowry), as the lands were gifted by Prince Algirdas to his nephews, or to the Vinnychka River, a tributary of the Southern Bug. Other theories link the name to distilleries (*vynnytsia*), the custom of weaving wreaths, or even the city's shape resembling a "crown" (*vinets*) overlooking the river.
Vinnytsia is renowned as a picturesque "city of fountains" (featuring the largest, the Roshen Fountain), the N.I. Pirogov Estate Museum—where the great surgeon rests—and its historic water tower.
This textile artwork was created using a unique mixed-media technique: textile appliqué (quilting, patchwork), machine and hand embroidery, batik, acrylic painting, textile markers, bead and sequin embroidery, thread weaving, and photo printing on fabric.
