Traditions Weddings and Loose Braids

Maryna Lukach

This is one of the oldest, most dramatic, and symbolically rich rituals, marking a young woman's transition from maidenhood to married life. The ceremony symbolizes a farewell to her parental home, her freedom as a maiden, and her purity, as well as her transition into the care of her husband.
Melancholy wedding songs are often sung during this ritual.
After the braid is undone, the hair is frequently re-braided into two plaits; the bride's head is then covered with a kerchief or a *namitka* (a traditional head-cloth), symbolizing her new status as a married woman.
This ritual reflects the deep-seated ancestral beliefs regarding the magical significance of hair and lineage, where covering the head was a mandatory mark of a married woman. While the custom is often adapted today, it remains a vital part of the traditional Ukrainian wedding. 2026
